Hillsdale is excited to announce that Yang Zhou and Jina Button will become our new co-head coaches for the girls varsity soccer team. In addition, Hillsdale alum Kayla Coleman will lead the junior varsity team as head coach. Coach Zhou served as  the associate head coach for the girls varsity team last year and is currently the technical director for girls soccer with the San Mateo County Earthquakes. Coach Zhou brings tremendous playing experience with her as she was a member of the Chinese National Team from 1989-1996 and played on the Chinese World Cup Team in 1991 and 1995. Coach Zhou played professionally in Japan from 1997-1999 before moving to the United States where she has been coaching in the Bay Area for over 15 years. Coach Zhou currently has a Coaching License “B”. “Coach Zhou is an excellent teacher of the game and will enhance the skill levels of each student in the Hillsdale soccer program,” notes athletic director Brett Stevenson.

Hillsdale will also add Jina Button to the staff as co-head varsity coach. Jina was recently hired to become the new physical education teacher at Hillsdale and Stevenson adds “that Jina demonstrated great enthusiasm in her interview about the importance of teaching and coaching at Hillsdale. The teacher-coach at Hillsdale plays a critical role in the social and athletic development of our student athletes.” Jina is a 17-year veteran Physical Education teacher and coach.  Jina previously taught and coached in Cupertino where she coached in the girls’ soccer program for several years.  Before her time in Cupertino Jina taught and was the athletic director at Bowditch Middle School.  Jina has coached girls’ soccer from youth soccer through high school. Jina grew up playing soccer for Peninsula United and has developed a passion for the game both as a player and a coach.

To complete the soccer staff, Hillsdale is excited to announce that Hillsdale alum Kayla Coleman will lead our JV soccer team. Kayla has played soccer for 14 years.  Kayla played for the Burlingame soccer club as well as MVLA.  Kayla played at Hillsdale on varsity women’s soccer all four years as a starter under Coach Shoman.  Kayla served as captain junior and senior year and received the varsity MVP award her senior year. Kayla continued to play throughout college at Occidental College in Los Angeles. “I am excited to come back to Hillsdale to help foster great experiences and memories of soccer there, like the ones I have.  I hope to develop fundamental skills and strategy, particularly by applying elements of tiki-taka, a style used by FC Barcelona and Japan’s women’s national team,” states Coach Coleman. Stevenson also notes “that Kayla is the perfect fit to lead our JV girls soccer team. Kayla has a passion for the game and had a great experience playing for former Hillsdale coach Samia Shoman. Kayla understands what it takes to play at the varsity level as well as the college level.” Hillsdale soccer is ready to make a move in the PAL. Students will meet the new coaching staff in August.
